It was immensely hot yesterday, with an intensity that saps your strength, exponentially, with each passing moment. We returned home last night from a social gathering, just as a severe storm hit. Now, I'm always pleased when storms come our way, but this one caused a tree limb to take out a transformer, which cut off power from ten houses, ours included. With no AC, the heat quickly began to build up inside. I used the electric company's automated phone system to report the incident, but waited for over an hour to speak with a rep, to make sure they received the order. In these regions, you seal up your house for the summer when you turn on that AC, to keep out the humidity. We didn't want to open our windows to mid-80's humid air, with no power to run any fans, so they stayed shut, with the hope they would fix our power shortly. That didn't happen.
It became unbearably stuffy, interrupting our sleep. Jan started feeling sick, and also couldn't sleep because I snored so heavily, due to having no power for my cpap machine (sleep apnea). We finally gave in around 3:00am, and opened the windows, since the storm had left behind a slight breeze. I had to sleep in a recliner the rest of the morning so Jan could rest.
Just as the morning sun began to bake the air entering our house, the electric co. showed up and restored power. That was around 7:30am. I shouted a "Thank you!" from the window, out to the repairmen, as I began sealing the house back up to restore the AC. We simply don't know how people lived here in the old days. It must have been truly miserable.
