Well, it's the Dudgeons' favorite time of the year again, Halloween, and this time we're not uprooting and moving, but are finally settled in and able to enjoy it. We also have special reasons to be extra excited since, this time around, we're in our own house, which we can spook out to our heart's content! Yes, I believe I actually considered 'spook potential' when we were house hunting and came across this one. The old-world brick architecture caught my attention, and visions of a creepy Gothic house burst in my mind. Sold! Well, we're not really making a haunted house, but we are getting in the spirit of the holiday, and we're now able to use almost all of our good decorations.
What I'm the most thrilled about is the method which I invented, as simple as it is, to hang some lights across our main gutter, 28 feet above the ground. Normally, it would take a 36' foot extension ladder to reach it, which made it seem a worthless endeavor, since there were greater priorities than buying a ladder I might only use a few times a year. As it so happened, the other day, as I sat in my chair, sipping coffee, I pondered the final solution to my light hanging problem, while watching Jan make Fairy Wings for our daughter's Halloween costume, using wire as a frame. Wire...strong wire... That was it!! I could make my own wire support system with hooks for hanging lights off of that 113 yr. old gutter. Once I figured a basic design, it only took maybe a half hour to make a 4 ft piece for each side, since the gutter is separated by break in the middle.
It was a little dangerous, leaning out a small window, holding a long extension pole and placing the lights over six feet out of reach, but it couldn't have been more dangerous than standing on a narrow leader 28 feet off the ground. At least, with this method, only half my body was outside. Now, I have lights below and above. Also, I'll be able to use the same system for hanging icicle lights for Christmas...another favorite!
